Freefall Jumpmaster

1. Purpose

This guide outlines the duties, responsibilities, and procedures for a Military Freefall (MFF) Jumpmaster operating within the 75th Ranger Regiment. MFF Jumpmasters are responsible for ensuring the safe, effective, and combat-ready deployment of personnel and equipment via high-altitude parachute operations.


2. Role of the MFF Jumpmaster

As an MFF JM, you are the final authority for parachutist safety, jump operations, and airborne execution aboard the aircraft. You command and control the jump process, enforce standard operating procedures, and advise commanders on MFF operations.


3. Types of MFF Operations

  • HALO (High Altitude, Low Opening)

    • Exfiltration or infiltration by parachuting from high altitude (typically 12,000–25,000 ft MSL) with parachute deployment at a low altitude (usually 3,500 ft AGL or below).

  • HAHO (High Altitude, High Opening)

    • Used for covert infiltration, parachutes are deployed soon after exit, allowing parachutists to glide long distances under canopy.


4. Core MFF Jumpmaster Responsibilities

Pre-Jump

  • Conduct mission analysis, terrain, and weather assessments.

  • Determine exit altitude and drop zone

  • Inspect aircraft suitability for the jump

  • Conduct Pre-Jump covering:

    • Enform all personal of plan (Equipment needed, opening altitude, ex.)

    • Coordinate with:

      • Aircrew

      • Command and control elements

      • Mission planners

During Flight

  • Maintain accountability of all jumpers.

  • Confirm winds, DZ status, and final mission brief with aircrew.

  • Execute jump commands:

    • Call Red Light (30 sec from dropzone)

    • Call Green Light (Inside drop zone)

    • Call each jumper's number.

    • Jumpmaster will be last number and exit the aircraft

Post-Landing

  • Conduct a check up on all jumpers.

  • Meet up at designated Rally Point
